Meet Beth Richards (she/her), Fashion and Product Design Professional and CEO of Beth Richards Design Inc.

In this exclusive, Beth shares her journey from high school fashion to a thriving swimwear brand, providing a glimpse into the world of fashion and empowerment.

A love letter to our community, Community High is a spotlight series that celebrates local creatives, entrepreneurs and changemakers. We’re asking the hard (and not so hard)-hitting questions to discover what makes these inspiring people so rad!

Tell us about yourself! How did you get involved in the fashion industry and swimwear?

I became interested in fashion as a teen and was lucky enough to have a fashion class in my high school. Later, I got a scholarship to the school I eventually went to. It's hard to believe I graduated 25 years ago and started my career.

Where did you get the inspiration to start 'Beth Richards'?

I saw an opportunity to start the clothing brand after a move out West. I never really considered it until I saw BC beaches and realized how underserved the category was. It became so much more to me, my kind of female manifesto in a sense, but the inspiration started by needing a nice black swimsuit.

What are some challenges running a sustainable swimwear business?

It’s expensive to do business the ethical way. The landscape has changed so much post-COVID, so there are many challenges for small businesses in general these days!

What has been your favourite piece of swimwear you have designed? And why?

I love a great minimal fit, and my go-to is the Audrey, a one-shoulder with a shoulder pad, which adds a bit of camp.

At what stage in the creation of your brand did you incorporate size inclusivity? What has the impact been on your business since doing this?

We were probably not as early as we could be with size inclusivity because our business was so driven by retailers and wholesale business. Still, I’m very proud of the added sizes and will continue to invest more.

What are the most valuable lessons you've learned throughout your journey as a designer and business owner?

I think it’s important to gain outside experience first and always accept feedback as graciously as possible, even when it’s difficult to hear. Being as calm as possible when issues arise is helpful – age has made me more chill. I used to let every small issue consume me.

Where is your favourite swimwear vacation destination?

Hawaii comes to mind since it’s absolute paradise, but I love Tofino and spa moments. If you are in a swimsuit, it’s probably not a bad thing ;)

What is your best way to decompress from a long day?

Wine! I love sitting outside with a glass and hanging with my dog and family.

What's next for you in 2023 and beyond?

I would love to expand into more apparel and dresses – stay tuned!

Share a photo of you in your happy place!

Tofino August 2020.
